PRODUCT DETAILS
Roof crossbars in aviation aluminium, 76 mm wide and 29 mm thick, with a raised clamp so a sunroof still opens. 3.1 mm manganese steel jaws, 4 cm of slide at each end, rated to a maximum load of 180 kg.
Raised for sunroof clearance
Most roof crossbars sit close to the roof, and on a car with a panoramic sunroof that means the glass cannot tilt or slide. These bars are built taller at the clamp, so the sunroof opens and closes with the bars fitted. For anyone who uses the roof for luggage without giving up the sunroof, that single detail decides whether the bars are usable at all.
3.1 mm jaws and 4 cm of slide
The clamp is a 3.1 mm manganese steel jaw, thicker than the 2.3 mm clamp on our crocodile style bars. A thicker jaw resists bending when the bar is loaded off-centre, which is what usually happens with a roof box on one side. Each end slides 4 cm, so one set of universal crossbars covers a range of rail spacings instead of a single model.
The bar section
The extruded bar measures 76 mm across and 29 mm deep, with an internal rib pattern rather than a hollow tube. The ribbing is what keeps the bar stiff under load and keeps wind noise down at motorway speed. Because the profile is narrow, it also leaves more room between the two bars for a roof box or a bike carrier.
What these crossbars carry
- Roof boxes and roof cargo baskets
- Bike carriers
- Luggage and waterproof bags
- Other roof-mounted outdoor gear
The vehicle needs factory roof rails — raised or flush — for the clamps to grip. Roof crossbars cannot be fitted to a bare roof with no rails at all.
One bar, several names
Depending on the market this is sold as a roof rack crossbar, a set of roof rail crossbars, or universal roof rack crossbars — the same 76 mm aluminium bar with the same 3.1 mm jaw. Shops that list it as universal roof crossbars or plain car roof crossbars are describing the same unit. Crossbars for roof rails and crossbars for roof rack are also the same product; the difference is only which rail type the buyer has.
